medical coding software

Medical coding software is specialist software designed to help a medical coder convert medical data into medical codes. These codes are then sent to insurance companies who then pay according to standard pre-agreed payment data. The two functions are often combined resulting in medical coding and billing software.
Software also helps with compliance with the relevant legal standards, and other functions such as claims editing, revenue analysis, bill submission, and even additional useful functions such as letter and report writing, patient scheduling and finance and accounting functions. Some software integrates with online functions or is even based entirely online.
Coding software sometimes integrates search functions with knowledge databases and coding manuals, and also searches and checks coding. Software can even be customized for the needs of particular businesses in this field.
The medical data which gets converted into codes can come from a variety of sources including patient histories, examinations, doctor's notes, lab tests, X-Ray results and other such medical sources.
The billing is not always done directly to the insurance companies. Sometimes the billing is sent via clearing houses, which can reduce errors and improve claim speed and results. Software can also sometimes analyze the resulting payments which come back from the insurance companies to determine how accurate the results match the expectations.
Errors in this field can cause major problems and delays as well as loss of revenue. Accuracy is even more critical now that there is a specific agency who aggressively searches for errors in medical billing especially as they get paid according to how many errors they find, which is of course controversial.
Medical coding software is a very important part of medical and healthcare facilities in the current competitive business world.
